RippleX Projects XRP Ledger AI Transactions Will Hit 10 Million as Agentic Payment Infrastructure Takes Shape
RippleX, the developer arm of Ripple, forecasts that AI agent transactions on the XRP Ledger will reach 10 million in the near term, building on a verified milestone of 1 million autonomous payments recorded on mainnet as of July 8, 2026. The projection arrives as Ripple formally joined the x402 Foundation, a Linux Foundation initiative standardizing how AI agents pay for services over the web.
The 10-million figure is a projection, not a confirmed count. The current baseline of roughly 1 million XRPL agentic transactions marks the network's first verifiable benchmark for software-initiated payments, where autonomous programs pay for services without human sign-off. RippleX made the forecast public today via The Block, positioning the XRP Ledger as core infrastructure for a payments category that has emerged rapidly alongside large language model deployment.
What x402 Does
The x402 protocol activates the HTTP 402 status code, a placeholder written into web standards decades ago and never used, to let AI agents pay for services inline with ordinary internet requests. A server prompts payment; the agent signs a stablecoin transaction and gains access. No bank account, credit check, or contract is required. As x402 documentation states: "An autonomous agent cannot open a bank account, pass a credit check or sign a SaaS contract, but can sign a transaction."
The x402 Foundation launched formally on July 14, 2026, the same day Ripple joined as a Premier Member. Its recent founding sets appropriate expectations: this is a standard in its earliest stages of broad deployment, not a mature ecosystem.
Coinbase originally developed x402 alongside Cloudflare and Stripe before handing it to the Linux Foundation in 2026 as an open standard. The x402 Foundation now counts 40 member companies, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Google, AWS, Circle, Coinbase, Stripe, Shopify, Adyen, Fiserv, Solana Foundation, and Stellar Development Foundation.
Mastercard's involvement extends further still. The company launched its "Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M)" product on June 10, naming RippleX as a partner. That product launch signals institutional validation of XRPL as agentic payment infrastructure that goes beyond Foundation membership.
Markus Infanger, Senior Vice President of RippleX, framed the rationale plainly: "Open standards like x402 help lay the foundation for trusted, interoperable machine-to-machine payments."
The Numbers, With Caveats
Across all chains supporting x402, approximately 75 million transactions settled over a 30-day measurement period, moving $24 million in total value. The average transaction size sits around 32 cents, with roughly 29 transactions per second processed network-wide. That activity spanned approximately 94,000 buyer accounts and 22,000 seller accounts. Coinbase's Base chain accounts for the bulk of cumulative volume, at approximately 169 million x402 transactions as of July 2026.
Those headline figures require qualification. An independent research study published in July 2026 found that only around $187,861 of that cross-chain settlement activity could be independently verified as payments between unrelated parties.
An additional $20 million may be genuine commerce but could not be confirmed. Chainalysis also noted that early Base chain volume was heavily influenced by a meme coin campaign (the PING token pay-to-mint campaign) rather than organic machine-to-machine use. Readers should treat ecosystem-wide transaction counts as directional indicators, not proof of mature economic activity.
The XRPL's own agentic transaction count, near 1 million, is a smaller but more specifically attributed figure tied to the ledger's mainnet infrastructure.
Why XRPL Competes Here
The XRP Ledger has operated continuously since 2012. Transactions finalize in 3 to 5 seconds with fees that are predictable before submission, meaning agents can budget costs reliably without bidding in a gas auction. The ledger also supports institutional controls including escrow, multi-signature authorization, and trust lines without requiring custom smart contracts. Ripple launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit on June 9, 2026, giving developers tools to integrate agentic payments through familiar frameworks like Claude and Cursor, with testnet onboarding achievable in under 30 minutes.
The operational bridge between XRPL and x402 runs through t54, the named integration partner whose infrastructure was already tracking close to 1 million XRPL agentic transactions. t54 is the route by which XRPL agents pay for API calls, AI inference, and digital services in XRP or RLUSD, making it the specific mechanism connecting XRPL to the broader x402 ecosystem.
Regional Stakes: Africa First
Outside the United States, the most concrete near-term impact sits in Africa. In June 2026, Ripple made a strategic investment in Flutterwave, the pan-African payments platform valued at $3.2 billion, and integrated RLUSD and the XRP Ledger into its rails across 34 countries. Sub-Saharan Africa received more than $205 billion in on-chain value between mid-2024 and mid-2025, a 52 percent year-on-year increase. Nigeria alone accounted for $92 billion of that flow and ranks in the global top 15 on Chainalysis's 2025 crypto adoption index.
Nigeria's regulatory environment has also matured: the country's Investments and Securities Act 2025 now recognizes digital assets as securities, with the SEC serving as the designated regulator. That framework gives institutional participants a clearer legal foundation for deploying stablecoin-based payment infrastructure at scale.
The 32-cent average x402 transaction maps directly onto the region's micro-commerce patterns: gig economy payouts, API-based micro-billing, and cross-border foreign exchange settlements at low amounts. Ripple also has active RLUSD distribution partnerships with Chipper Cash, VALR, Yellow Card, and Mercy Corps Ventures in Kenya, the last of which is focused on humanitarian aid delivery.
Reece Merrick, Ripple's Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, stated: "Our investment will establish RLUSD within that infrastructure, with Flutterwave driving stablecoin flows over the XRPL and deepening its role as a settlement layer for real-world payments across the continent."
For South Asia, particularly India (the world's largest remittance recipient at more than $125 billion annually), the infrastructure case is supported by State Bank of India's confirmed XRP Ledger adoption for institutional settlement. The application layer for agentic payments, however, has not yet been formally announced. India's 30 percent crypto tax and 1 percent Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on transfers remain significant friction for high-volume, low-value transactions that are the defining profile of x402 commerce. Regulatory environments in Bangladesh and Pakistan are more restrictive still, a factor that shapes the realistic pace of adoption across the broader South Asian corridor.
Market Context
XRP was trading at approximately $1.11 as of July 15, 2026, up 3.5 percent in 24 hours, with a market capitalization near $69 billion. RLUSD supply has grown more than 20 percent in 2026 to reach $1.6 billion, against a global stablecoin market of roughly $300 billion. Ripple's broader payments network spans 300-plus institutions across 55 countries and had processed a cumulative $95 billion in volume through January 2026.
The practical test for RippleX's 10-million forecast will be whether XRPL agentic volume grows through independent developer adoption or remains concentrated in a small number of internally linked services. The x402 Foundation's open-source, Linux Foundation governance model lowers barriers to entry. Whether builders in Lagos, Nairobi, Mumbai, or Karachi convert that access into production deployments will determine whether the milestone reflects genuine economic utility or a controlled demonstration.
