Bitcoin Needs a Weekly Close Above $81,700 to Confirm Bull Market, CryptoQuant Says

On-chain data firm CryptoQuant identified three stacked resistance levels blocking Bitcoin's next major advance, with the 365-day moving average at $81,700 serving as the earliest valid signal of a new bull cycle. The analysis, published September 12, 2026, comes as Bitcoin trades near $77,200 after stalling at the top of a 24% two-week rally.

Bitcoin faces a clear sequence of hurdles before analysts will call a confirmed bull market. According to CryptoQuant, the 365-day moving average sitting at $81,700 is the first and most immediate barrier.

A confirmed weekly close above that level is the threshold the firm considers technically meaningful. Two further ceilings sit above it: the 3x Metcalfe valuation band at $83,600, derived from a model holding that a network's value scales with the square of its users and which already turned Bitcoin back in May 2026, and the trader realized-price upper band at $88,700. That last metric tracks the average acquisition cost of active market participants and has historically marked the point where profit-taking accelerates and suppresses further gains.

The analysis adds important texture to what looked like a strong recovery. Bitcoin climbed roughly 24% over two weeks, rising from below $65,000 to above $82,000 before losing momentum. The reversal was not random. CryptoQuant's data shows that long-term holders sold approximately 539,000 BTC in the $77,100 to $80,200 price range over the course of this year, creating a dense supply wall that is now directly overhead. Moreno described this zone as "the nearest and heaviest on-chain supply resistance above the current price." As of September 11, Bitcoin was trading at roughly $77,218, already within the lower portion of that supply wall rather than beneath it.

The downside picture is also defined by on-chain data. The nearest major support sits at $70,000, where the 200-day moving average provides a technical floor. Below that lies a stronger structural base: an accumulation zone between $62,000 and $65,000, where long-term holders absorbed approximately 476,000 BTC earlier in the cycle. That same zone had previously been flagged by CryptoQuant as a potential cycle bottom, anchored near the $53,600 aggregate realized price for all market participants.

Broader technical indicators remain constructive, though with some caution warranted. Bitcoin is trading above its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day exponential moving averages. The MVRV-Z Score, a ratio comparing market value to on-chain realized value, sits well below the elevated readings seen at prior cycle peaks. The NVT ratio, which compares network value to transaction throughput, also reflects mid-cycle conditions rather than bubble territory. MACD momentum, however, is decelerating, signaling that the rally is maturing rather than accelerating.

Institutional flows add another layer of context. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $731 million in net inflows on September 3, 2026, the largest single-day total since January 14, 2026. BlackRock's IBIT fund accounted for $454 million of that figure, representing more than 60% of the day's total.

Total assets under management across all US spot Bitcoin ETFs have now crossed $103 billion. The flow data is not uniformly positive, however. Outflows of $236 million on September 1 and $101 million on September 9 indicate that institutional investors have been proceeding cautiously near current price levels, a pattern consistent with what CryptoQuant's supply-wall analysis would predict.

For users across South Asia and Africa, this analysis carries direct practical weight. India, ranked first in the 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index for the third consecutive year with approximately 119 million crypto holders, operates under a 30% capital gains tax and a 1% TDS on crypto transfers. Clear bull market confirmation above $81,700 could amplify retail and institutional activity in a market that is already trading at scale. In Pakistan, ranked third globally in the same index with over 9 million holders, Bitcoin's performance matters as a remittance tool. The country receives roughly $31.2 billion in annual remittances, and according to reporting by Express Tribune and analysis by CoinLaw, blockchain-based transfers are capable of reducing fees to as low as 0.1%, potentially saving more than $1 billion in annual transfer costs relative to traditional corridors. Pakistan's high-inflation environment has also made Bitcoin increasingly attractive as a store of value, adding a distinct driver to adoption that runs alongside the remittance case. A sustained bull market would strengthen both dynamics.

Nigeria, ranked second globally, moves more than $40 million per month in peer-to-peer Bitcoin trades under banking restrictions imposed by the central bank. The ability of Bitcoin to clear or fail at the $81,700 level will have a near-term effect on naira-denominated BTC pricing and P2P trading volumes.

Elsewhere on the continent, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Ghana have all entered the global top 20 adoption rankings in what the 2026 index describes as the continent's strongest showing on record. Ethiopia and Kenya have attracted mining investment driven by competitive hydroelectric power costs, while Ghana's inclusion reflects broader retail adoption trends across the region. Sub-Saharan Africa as a whole has seen stablecoin growth of over 180% year-over-year, with overall on-chain value received rising between 92% and 414% depending on asset type, underscoring the depth of the region's engagement with digital assets well beyond any single market cycle.

CryptoQuant's framing is not bearish. Moreno stated the position directly: "The overall picture remains bullish. Bitcoin simply needs to digest the overhead supply and break its valuation ceilings before a new leg up can develop." Regional holders who accumulated during the $62,000 to $65,000 phase are sitting on paper gains and, according to CryptoQuant's model, have a structurally sound cost basis even if the current rally retreats. The next few weekly closes will determine whether $81,700 is a ceiling or a launching pad.
