Renzo Finance Launches Basis Trade Product on Hyperliquid, Pivoting Away from Its Restaking Roots

Renzo Finance, formerly known as Renzo Protocol, has introduced Renzo Basis, an automated delta-neutral yield product announced for Hyperliquid, the leading decentralized perpetuals exchange. The announcement came on September 9, 2026, with the product initially supporting BTC and HYPE, Hyperliquid's native token. The launch marks a significant strategic shift for a protocol whose core restaking business has shed roughly 98% of its peak value over the past two years.

Renzo Basis works by holding a spot long position and an equally sized perpetual futures short position in the same asset at the same time. Because the two legs offset each other, the product carries no net directional exposure to price movements. Its income comes from funding rate payments: when perpetual contracts trade above spot price, which is the typical condition in bullish markets because of strong demand for leveraged longs, the short side collects regular payments from long-side traders.

On Hyperliquid, those payments settle every hour. The protocol handles all position management automatically, so users do not need to monitor or rebalance anything manually.

The choice of Hyperliquid as the launch venue reflects where the liquidity is. The platform controls 36.47% of the decentralized derivatives market, processed $245 billion in perpetuals volume over the past 30 days, and reported $14.3 billion in open interest on September 8, the day before this announcement. HYPE, its native token, trades near $85.60 and reached an all-time high of $89.54 just three days ago, placing it ninth by market cap globally at roughly $19 to $21 billion.

The protocol allocates 97% of its perpetual trading fees toward HYPE buybacks, a mechanic that has made HYPE particularly interesting for yield-seekers on the platform itself.

Renzo's decision to launch here is also a business reality check. The company built its name as a liquid restaking protocol on EigenLayer, issuing ezETH, a token representing users' restaked ETH. It peaked at around $4 billion in total value locked in early 2024. A de-pegging event in April 2024 briefly sent ezETH to $688 on Uniswap, and the protocol never recovered its former scale.

As of today, Renzo holds approximately $92.1 million in TVL, a decline of roughly 98% from peak. The REZ governance token trades at $0.0026, down more than 99% from its April 2024 high of $0.28, with a circulating market cap of about $22.6 million. Current ezETH yields sit around 2.4%, well below the 5 to 15% APY range available through more competitive restaking stacks.

The rebrand to Renzo Finance and the launch of Renzo Basis represent the protocol's strategic pivot under that pressure.

Renzo Finance has framed the broader opportunity in institutional terms. According to reporting by The Block and Crypto Briefing, the company stated: "Structured products are a multitrillion-dollar category in traditional finance, but similar products remain limited onchain because they can be difficult to set up, monitor, and manage."

Leadership also pointed to the growth of real-world assets as a catalyst for what it called a "massive growth opportunity" for onchain structured products and advanced yields.

Renzo has previously run managed vaults using basis and carry strategies and worked with Superstate, an institutional DeFi asset manager, on CME futures funds, so the underlying mechanics are not new to the team. What is new is bringing them to permissionless, decentralized infrastructure.

Hyperliquid is the first venue; the company has named Lighter (a decentralized exchange with a Robinhood platform integration) as the next planned deployment. Autocallables and growth notes are also in the pipeline as two additional structured product types common in traditional finance. Autocallables are structured products that pay regular coupons with early automatic redemption triggers, while growth notes are instruments designed to track asset upside while providing downside protection. No timelines were provided for either.

Fee structures and risk parameters for Renzo Basis were not disclosed at launch.

For users in South Asia and Africa, where crypto adoption rates are among the highest globally, the product has meaningful relevance but carries real caveats. India ranks first in Chainalysis's 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index with approximately 119 million holders; Pakistan ranks third; Nigeria ranks sixth. In Nigeria, elevated DeFi engagement is partly driven by naira devaluation and the need to hedge against persistent inflation. In South Africa, institutional interest in onchain products is growing, with major banks including Standard Bank and Absa Group exploring DeFi partnerships, signaling broader regional legitimacy for structured onchain instruments.

In markets where bank deposit rates are eroded by inflation or where formal financial infrastructure is limited, automated yield strategies can be attractive alternatives. In India, fixed deposit rates currently run around 6 to 7%, offering limited real returns. In Pakistan, nominal deposit rates of roughly 10 to 12% are heavily eroded by inflation, making the search for real yield particularly acute in both countries.

The delta-neutral design is a genuine advantage for users who want exposure to funding income without taking on directional price risk, a feature that matters in African markets where sharp BTC drawdowns have repeatedly caught retail traders off-guard.

However, the risks deserve equal attention. Funding rates can flip negative in bear markets, at which point the short leg pays out rather than receives, turning the strategy into a net loss.

This is not a guaranteed yield product. Smart contract risk is compounded by the multi-protocol nature of the automation layer. Bridging assets from centralized exchanges to Hyperliquid involves fees and steps that add friction for less experienced users, though Hyperliquid itself charges no gas fees for trading once assets are on the platform.

Regulatory frameworks covering automated DeFi yield instruments remain unclear in both India and Pakistan. India has established a crypto tax framework, but DeFi-specific guidance is unsettled. Pakistan's State Bank has oscillated on broader crypto policy, leaving similar uncertainty for structured onchain products.

Renzo Basis is a coherent product built on proven arbitrage mechanics, but readers in any market should understand what they are buying before treating funding rate income as a fixed return.
