Hyperscale Data Closes Michigan Bitcoin Mine, Signs $1.2B AI Deal

Hyperscale Data (NYSE American: GPUS) shut down its Bitcoin mining operation in Dowagiac, Michigan on September 1, 2026, converting the 617,000-square-foot campus into an AI data center under a 10-year contract with an undisclosed California neocloud provider worth approximately $1.2 billion.

The agreement, executed through Hyperscale's subsidiary Alliance Cloud Services, commits 20 megawatts of compute capacity at the outset. The contract includes two optional five-year extensions and an additional 32 MW expansion clause, which would push total contract value above $3 billion if fully exercised. The Dowagiac site has a planned total capacity of roughly 340 MW, meaning the current AI contract occupies about 20 percent of what the company intends to eventually build out.

CEO William Horne called the shutdown "a straightforward profitability call." That framing is consistent with sector-wide economics. Bitcoin production costs averaged around $74,300 per coin in January 2026, with electricity alone accounting for roughly $46,400 of that figure. US wholesale electricity prices have climbed to approximately $51 per megawatt-hour this year, compressing margins across the industry. By contrast, companies that have converted mining infrastructure to AI colocation are generating operating margins of 80 to 90 percent on those contracts. One frequently cited benchmark from miner HIVE Digital holds that 10 MW of Nvidia H100 GPU infrastructure can generate revenue comparable to 100 MW of Bitcoin mining capacity.

Hyperscale Data's own financial position makes the pivot hard to argue against. The stock has lost roughly 90 percent of its value over the past year, hitting a post-split adjusted all-time low of $0.277 on August 28, just days before the mining shutdown. The company executed a 1-for-5 reverse stock split effective August 25. Horne acknowledged the gap between current market valuation and the contracted power now on the books, telling investors that the company's market capitalization should "begin to normalize in comparison to its available contracted power capacity."

The company has also been liquidating Bitcoin holdings to fund the transition. In a tranche disclosed earlier this year, it sold approximately 65 BTC at an average price near $78,500 per coin, generating $5.1 million directed toward Michigan facility construction. A separate sale of around 100 BTC was recorded in July 2026. The company held a peak of 704 BTC in late 2025. The Bitcoin treasury is held under a separate subsidiary, Ault Capital Group, which the company plans to spin off in 2027 via a Series F Preferred Stock exchange.

Hyperscale Data is not alone in this shift. Public miners have announced more than $70 billion in cumulative AI and high-performance computing contracts globally. IREN signed a $9.7 billion deal with Microsoft for 76,000 Nvidia GPUs. Hut 8 locked in a 15-year, $9.8 billion lease for a 352 MW Texas facility built to Nvidia's reference architecture. Global Bitcoin hashrate actually declined 5.8 percent in Q2 2026 to roughly 1,004 exahashes per second, which may reflect the departure of major miners from the network, though hashrate can fluctuate for multiple reasons including seasonal energy pricing and hardware upgrade cycles. The structural pressure from energy costs is unlikely to reverse for miners still in the business.

For developers and enterprises in South Asia and Africa, this wave of conversion carries specific implications. Africa hosts roughly 18 percent of the global population but less than 1 percent of global data center capacity. India would need to nearly double its existing infrastructure just to satisfy current domestic demand, according to ABI Research. The unnamed neocloud customer at the center of the Hyperscale Data deal may serve clients across those regions, as neocloud providers (companies that rent GPU compute to third parties) typically serve a global customer base. When new GPU supply comes online in North America, it can affect what a developer in Lagos, Nairobi, or Karachi pays per GPU-hour, exerting at least some downward pressure on the global spot market for compute rentals.

The longer pattern cuts both ways. As US electricity costs rise, low-cost hydroelectric, solar, and stranded gas resources in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia become comparatively more attractive for Bitcoin mining. That could draw marginal mining activity southward. At the same time, the concentration of AI compute investment in North America and Western Europe, driven by established fiber networks and regulatory predictability, is unlikely to shift quickly. Africa's overall data center market is projected to exceed $5 billion this year, a figure that reflects how little infrastructure the continent currently hosts. Separately, the combined Middle East and Africa AI Data Center Market is projected to grow toward $72 billion by 2033, according to Transpire Insight, though Africa's share of that regional total starts from a very low base.

Hyperscale Data's next disclosure will likely address construction timelines for the remaining 320 MW at the Michigan site and may clarify the identity of the California neocloud customer, which neither party has confirmed publicly. Discussions between the two companies began as early as June 2026, suggesting the commercial terms have been in development for roughly three months before the formal shutdown.
