Bitmine Crosses 5.9 Million ETH as Tom Lee Targets 5% of Circulating Supply
Bitmine Immersion Technologies purchased 53,501 ether on August 31, 2026, pushing its total holdings to 5,901,112 ETH and a treasury value of $15.6 billion, the company said in an official press release. The New York-listed firm (NYSE: BMNR) has now bought ethereum every week for 65 consecutive weeks (since June 30, 2025), cementing its position as the world's largest publicly disclosed corporate ETH holder.
The purchase brings Bitmine to 4.9% of ethereum's circulating supply of 120.7 million tokens, placing the firm 98% of the way toward Chairman Tom Lee's stated "Alchemy of 5%" target: the goal of accumulating 5% of total circulating ETH supply. ETH was trading at approximately $2,511 per token at 3 p.m. ET on August 30, the reference price used in the company's press release, giving the position a mark-to-market value that places it second only to Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) among all public corporate digital asset treasuries by total dollar value, according to AMINA Bank Research.
Staking as a Revenue Engine
Bitmine has moved 5,067,309 ETH, roughly 86% of its total position, into its proprietary MAVAN (Made in America Validator Network) staking platform. Staking involves locking tokens to help validate transactions on the ethereum network in exchange for yield. The company reported a seven-day annualised staking rate of 2.63%, which it projects will generate $335 million in annual revenue at current ETH prices. If it stakes its remaining holdings, that figure rises to an estimated $390 million per year.
Lee stated in the release that Bitmine has now staked more ETH than any other entity globally through direct staking, a claim the company has not independently supported and one that applies specifically to direct-staking arrangements rather than liquid staking protocols. The distinction matters: liquid staking providers such as Lido already control far larger absolute volumes, with Lido alone accounting for about 62% of the liquid staking segment. With approximately 39.7 million ETH staked across the entire ethereum network, Bitmine's 5.07 million staked tokens represent roughly 12.7% of all staked supply sitting inside a single corporate entity, an emerging concern for Ethereum's validator decentralisation that warrants monitoring.
Beyond ETH, Bitmine holds 211 bitcoin, a $180 million stake in Beast Industries, an $81 million position in Eightco Holdings (NASDAQ: ORBS), and $541 million in cash and securities. The company also authorised a $4 billion share buyback programme and has repurchased 19.1 million shares since July 1. BMNR was added to the Russell 1000 Index on June 26, 2026, a milestone that expanded its visibility among institutional investors.
Institutional Flows and the Regulatory Backdrop
Bitmine's latest purchase arrives alongside a surge in institutional ethereum demand. US spot ETH exchange-traded funds recorded $1.42 billion in net inflows over nine consecutive trading sessions from August 17 to 28. BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) accounted for roughly $1.02 billion of that total and has now attracted approximately $12.74 billion in cumulative net inflows since its July 2024 launch.
On the regulatory side, the CLARITY Act, a bipartisan US bill that would formally codify ethereum's existing classification as a digital commodity under CFTC oversight, remains stalled in the Senate after missing a recess deadline following a cloture motion filed August 8. Passage now appears unlikely before 2027. The bill would entrench in statute a classification already established by joint SEC-CFTC guidance issued in March 2026, a development widely seen as constructive for the asset class even with legislation delayed.
In comments tied to Bitmine's July purchase, Lee framed the bill's eventual passage as a core rationale for aggressive ETH accumulation, describing it as a directional bet on regulatory normalisation. Some analysts have questioned the consistency of that public stance, however, pointing to reporting from Wu Block Substack suggesting internal Fundstrat research earlier in 2026 carried more cautious near-term projections on ETH prices.
What This Means for Users Outside the United States
For crypto participants in South Asia and Africa, where ethereum's underlying infrastructure is already deeply embedded in daily financial activity, Bitmine's accumulation carries concrete implications.
India, which leads the 2026 Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index and has an estimated 93 million crypto holders, has the world's highest rate of retail DeFi participation. Much of that activity runs on Ethereum-based protocols. Sustained corporate buying at this scale tightens liquid sell-side supply and may underpin ETH valuations over time, a dynamic to which Indian DeFi users hold direct exposure.
Pakistan ranks eighth globally in the 2026 Chainalysis index and fourth in retail centralised exchange transactions, reflecting deep retail engagement across the broader South Asian region.
Nigeria ranks second globally in overall crypto adoption and first in DeFi value. For Nigerian users already navigating persistent naira inflation, the staking yield angle is worth noting directly: ETH staking at 2.63% to 3.8% annualised competes meaningfully with traditional savings instruments, particularly given that inflation has steadily eroded the real value of naira-denominated savings. That yield comes alongside exposure to an asset that outperformed the S&P 500 by 54 percentage points in Q3 2026, according to Bitmine's own figures, though ETH currently trades at approximately $2,511, well below its August 2025 all-time high of approximately $4,953.
Kenya and Ethiopia, both new entrants to the top 20 global adoption ranking, are part of a sub-Saharan Africa region that received over $205 billion in on-chain value between mid-2024 and mid-2025, a 52% year-on-year increase. Developer communities in Nairobi and Addis Ababa building on ethereum may find that institutional validation from a major US-listed company improves their fundraising and partnership conversations.
Looking Ahead
BMNR shares closed at $23.80 on August 28, down 7.14% on the day. The stock's 52-week range runs from a low of $12.80 to a high of $65.60, placing the current price in the lower half of that band. Compounding the picture, Bitmine's ETH treasury is valued at $15.6 billion against a market capitalisation of approximately $14.36 billion, meaning the treasury currently exceeds the equity's market value. That structural discount mirrors patterns seen with MicroStrategy during its bitcoin accumulation phase.
Whether institutional inflows into spot ETH ETFs and the eventual passage of the CLARITY Act can close that gap will likely define the stock's trajectory through year-end. In the company's press release, Lee stated: "We believe there are multiple positive catalysts as we head into the final months of 2026."
What shape those catalysts take, and whether they flow through to the equity or remain confined to the token, remains the central question for BMNR investors heading into Q4.
