Prague Crypto Firm RockawayX Acquires Hedge Fund Relayer Capital, Targets $150M Liquid Token Vehicle

RockawayX, a Prague-based crypto investment firm managing roughly $2 billion in assets, has acquired Relayer Capital, a two-year-old crypto hedge fund founded in 2024, and is now raising up to $150 million for a renamed liquid token fund, according to reporting by The Block and Forbes published August 25, 2026.

The acquired fund will be rebranded as the RockawayX Liquid Opportunities Fund. Austin Barack, who founded Relayer Capital in 2024, will stay on to manage the vehicle. The fund's mandate centers on publicly traded tokens and crypto-related equities that RockawayX considers undervalued. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The move marks a shift in strategy for RockawayX, which built its reputation through early-stage venture bets. The firm was a seed investor in Solana and has backed more than 100 blockchain projects across two venture funds. Its first fund posted a 5.4x multiple on invested capital, with returns driven by positions in Solana, Wintermute, and Morpho Labs. Its second venture fund closed at $125 million in early 2025. The new liquid fund sits alongside an existing market-neutral credit vehicle that has generated a 42.59% absolute return since its April 2022 launch. Forbes characterized the firm's direction plainly: while some crypto venture firms are pivoting toward artificial intelligence and robotics, RockawayX is doubling down on digital assets.

Barack's career spans roles across multiple corners of the digital asset industry. Before starting Relayer, he was a partner at CoinFund, where he wrote investment theses for projects including Worldcoin and Ether.fi. He previously served as VP of Finance at 21Shares, a major crypto exchange-traded product issuer, and was an early employee at cross-border payments company Payoneer. Barack also holds a degree from The Wharton School. Relayer was operating as a single-person fund at the time of the acquisition, yet Forbes reported it generated approximately 70% returns this year. Two positions reportedly drove much of that performance: Hyperliquid (HYPE), the on-chain perpetual futures exchange whose token is up roughly 219% in 2026 and has captured around 70% of all on-chain perpetual futures volume with more than $10.5 billion in daily trading; and Venice AI (VVV), a decentralized AI protocol whose token has risen more than 1,000% this year according to Forbes, though other sources place the gain between 460% and 530%, on the back of $100 million in annualized revenue.

The deal also arrives after a separate transaction fell apart. In December 2025, RockawayX signed a non-binding term sheet for Nasdaq-listed Solmate Infrastructure (ticker: SLMT) to acquire the firm in an all-stock deal that would have combined assets exceeding $2 billion. That combination was targeted to close in the first quarter of 2026 but did not proceed. Whether the Relayer acquisition signals a deliberate turn toward organic expansion of the firm's own product suite rather than a public-market merger is an analytical read; RockawayX has not issued any on-record statement connecting the two transactions.

For investors and builders outside the United States, the deal carries implications worth watching. According to The Block and Forbes, RockawayX has framed the new fund partly as an expansion of its crypto offerings in the US market, a pattern that fits a broader trend. Crypto venture deal flow globally reached $8.7 billion in the first half of 2026, up 47% year over year, while institutional limited partner allocations to the asset class rose from 2.3% to 5.1% over the same period. Silicon Valley's share of global crypto venture deal flow has fallen from 45% in 2022 to 31% by mid-2026, according to data from Insights4.vc, while London, Singapore, and Dubai have grown. A joint framework from the SEC and CFTC, published March 17, 2026, classified crypto assets into five regulatory categories for the first time and is expected to make the US a more attractive jurisdiction for institutional liquid crypto funds.

European capital repositioning toward the US could reduce the pipeline flowing into projects in South Asia and Africa, markets that have historically relied on European crypto venture firms for early-stage backing. That gap is visible in the numbers. Nigeria's peer-to-peer crypto trading volumes exceed $2.4 billion per month. South Africa's monthly volumes approach $1.8 billion. India's crypto market continues to operate under a 30% flat tax on gains and a 1% tax deducted at source on transfers, a structure that has suppressed domestic trading activity but could increase appetite for institutional vehicles that can navigate those frictions, even as few global funds are currently structured for Indian limited partners. Yet liquid token funds of this type remain almost entirely focused on Western LP bases and Western-listed assets. The tokens that Relayer reportedly held, particularly Hyperliquid, do have significant retail followings in Nigeria, India, and Pakistan, where traders use on-chain perpetual exchanges as alternatives to centralized platforms. Institutional validation of those assets through a formal fund structure may accelerate pricing awareness in those communities, even if direct access to the fund itself remains out of reach.

One thread worth monitoring: RockawayX is co-building the Solana City accelerator hub in Dubai alongside the Solana Foundation and Helius Labs. Dubai serves as a financial gateway for both South Asian and African capital. The firm's institutional footprint there may matter to regional founders seeking backing, regardless of where the new liquid fund is domiciled.

The fundraising target of $150 million puts the RockawayX Liquid Opportunities Fund well below the scale of the largest crypto hedge funds. Whether the firm hits that target will depend in part on how long Hyperliquid and Venice AI can sustain the performance figures that drew attention to Relayer Capital ahead of the acquisition, though RockawayX has not publicly confirmed that token performance was the decisive factor in its decision to acquire.
