AI Agents Are Starting to Spend Money. The Infrastructure to Verify That Spending Is Still Catching Up.
Eigen Labs says its verifiable compute platform has processed 165 million machine payments. On-chain data tells a more complicated story about what that actually means for developers outside the United States.
EigenCloud, the infrastructure platform formerly known as EigenLayer, published a detailed account in May 2026 of how its technology underpins a new wave of AI agents that can autonomously pay for digital services. The piece, authored by Zeeshan Jawed of Eigen Labs, came roughly a month after the April 20 launch of Agentic.Market, a directory of roughly 100,000 AI-accessible services built by developer Nick Prince and described as "the homepage of the agent economy." The platform runs on x402, an open payment standard that lets AI agents pay for resources using stablecoins without API keys, login credentials, or any human approval.
The core technology is straightforward to explain. When an AI agent requests a paid service, the server returns an HTTP 402 "Payment Required" response, a status code that predates the modern web but was never widely used. The agent reads the payment instructions embedded in that response, signs a stablecoin transaction, and retries the request with proof of payment attached. The entire cycle is designed to close in seconds. No subscription. No intermediary. No account. EigenCloud adds a verification layer on top of this: its compute infrastructure runs inside Intel TDX trusted execution environments, meaning the code an agent executes and the outputs it produces can be cryptographically audited after the fact. EigenCloud's architecture extends beyond that compute layer to include EigenDA, a verifiable data availability system, and EigenAI, which provides deterministic and auditable AI inference. Alongside x402, the platform supports AP2, a protocol built on top of x402 that enables agent-to-agent commerce with verifiable compute attestations across multi-agent workflows, addressing how accountability is maintained when multiple agents collaborate autonomously.
By the time Agentic.Market launched, x402 had logged 165 million cumulative transactions and roughly $50 million in total volume, with approximately 480,000 active AI agents operating across the network, according to Eigen Labs. An earlier CoinDesk report had cited a figure of 69,000 active agents; the higher number reflects the Eigen Labs blog's own count and may capture agents at different stages of activity. The x402 Foundation, donated to the Linux Foundation in April 2026 for neutral governance, counts Google, Microsoft, AWS, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Circle, Cloudflare, Polygon Labs, American Express, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Base, Thirdweb, and KakaoPay among its members. The practical problem is that stablecoin settlement and local payment rails (mobile money wallets, bank payouts, local tax compliance) are not yet connected in most African markets. Until that bridge is built, the economic loop cannot close for a merchant in Lagos or a developer in Nairobi who wants to monetize a service through Agentic.Market. Regulatory activity is advancing nonetheless: Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and Egypt are among the most active African jurisdictions developing frameworks for digital assets, with adoption driven largely by remittances and cross-border trade. McKinsey projects that generative AI could generate between $61 billion and $103 billion per year in economic value for Africa, a figure that underscores the case for enterprise B2B entry points. Analysts at Empower Africa point to cross-border trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area, government procurement automation, and agricultural supply chain coordination as the most viable near-term use cases.
In South Asia, the picture is different in form but similar in tension. India's UPI payment network has demonstrated that high-velocity, low-value infrastructure can operate at population scale, and Visa's 2026 Asia-Pacific outlook names AI, stablecoins, and digital identity as the three forces reshaping regional payments. Singapore-based startup Stables is building middleware to route stablecoin transactions across Asia's fragmented cross-border B2B corridors, targeting a market projected at $28.9 trillion. The company is embedding Anthropic MCP servers into payment rails for autonomous compliance, FX, and settlement. Its chief executive has stated that "the real growth opportunity is in machine-to-machine payments, as AI agents increasingly move money on behalf of businesses." Pakistan launched a VARA (Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority) regulatory sandbox for crypto in February 2026. India's strict crypto tax rules illustrate a broader regional pattern: regulatory caution remains the dominant variable shaping where autonomous financial agents can operate. EigenCloud's argument is that as AI agents begin handling real economic value, provenance and proof matter more than raw performance.
