EigenLayer Founder: AI Agents Need Crypto Infrastructure Before They Can Operate Independently
Sreeram Kannan argues that the speed of AI decision-making has outpaced the legal and financial systems agents need to act. His company's answer is blockchain-native coordination infrastructure, with India already in its sights.

Eigen Labs founder Sreeram Kannan used a May 2026 blog post, adapted from an interview with a16z crypto, to lay out what he sees as the defining bottleneck in the AI agent boom: autonomous software can now make decisions in seconds, but it still waits days for human-controlled legal and financial systems to catch up. His proposed solution is crypto infrastructure, specifically the kind his own company is building through EigenCloud.
The core argument is compact. As Kannan puts it, "AI is intelligence accelerated. Crypto is coordination accelerated." He draws on the historian Yuval Harari's argument in Sapiens that humans succeeded not through superior raw intelligence but through superior coordination at scale.
Kannan's contention is that coordination, not intelligence, is now the scarce resource. AI has made thinking cheap; the contracts, property rights, and capital systems that let organizations act on their thinking have not moved at the same speed.
The practical gap he identifies is legal standing. Today's AI agents cannot own assets, enter binding agreements, or bear liability. Kannan cites Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella's framing of this problem and goes further: blockchains, he argues, can substitute for those missing legal wrappers. A smart contract can hold funds, define rules for how they are spent, and execute without requiring a parent company to co-sign every action. Kannan describes the endpoint as "sovereign agents," software entities with their own wallets that can earn revenue, reinvest in their own development, and distribute on-chain revenue shares to participants, all without a corporate intermediary.
He puts a rough timeline on meaningful progress toward that model at around three years.
Eigen Labs is positioning its developer platform, EigenCloud, as early infrastructure for that future. EigenCloud bundles four components: EigenDA for data availability, EigenVerify for dispute resolution, EigenCompute for execution, and tooling for what the company calls Actively Validated Services (AVSs), third-party protocols that borrow security from Ethereum's staking network without having to build it from scratch. At the time of EigenCloud's launch, roughly 200 AVSs were live or in development, with around $2 billion in application value secured through the network. Approximately $12 billion in ETH had been restaked, and ecosystem companies had collectively raised more than $500 million. EigenDA processes data at 50 megabytes per second with sub-ten-second latency. Operator participation includes Google Cloud and Coinbase, and the node network holds approximately $20 billion in staked assets.
EigenLayer's own on-chain numbers tell a more complicated story. Total value locked (TVL) in the protocol peaked at roughly $19.7 billion before falling to around $8.9 billion as of March 2026, a drop that reflects cooling enthusiasm for restaking incentives and increased competition from rivals including Symbiotic, Karak, and Babylon. EigenLayer still holds an estimated 93.9% share of the Ethereum restaking market, but the TVL decline is real. Kannan acknowledged in a separate a16z interview (see disclosure above) that the broader market is not yet at the scale the full vision requires: "I think it's too early to have hyper-modularization… the market size is not there, the revenue is not there, the apps are not there."
The coordination argument Kannan is making lands differently depending on where you are. India is the geography where Eigen Labs has moved most deliberately. The country holds between 20 and 30 percent of global Web3 developers, approximately 150 million active crypto users (more than any other country), and an on-chain value inflow that exceeded $338 billion in 2025. According to NASSCOM, approximately 40 percent of all new dApps globally now feature Indian founding teams. EigenCloud launched its "Agentic by Eigen" global builder series in Bangalore in March 2026, with Antler India, AI founders, solo developers, and enterprise engineers among the participants.
For Indian teams building AI agent applications, EigenCloud's primitives offer a way to provide cryptographic verification of agent actions, without constructing trust infrastructure from scratch.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, the coordination gap Kannan describes is not a thought experiment. Africa recorded 19.4 percent year-on-year growth in crypto adoption in 2025, the highest of any global region. Nigeria alone processed an estimated $26 billion in stablecoin volume, with 95 percent of respondents in a February 2026 survey saying they prefer receiving payments in stablecoins, largely because naira volatility and limited banking access make traditional rails unreliable.
On-chain value received across Sub-Saharan Africa grew 52 percent year over year to exceed $205 billion in the twelve months to June 2025.
AI agents that can autonomously hold wallets, verify their actions, and execute stablecoin transfers could reduce friction in exactly these high-volume, institution-constrained environments. EigenCloud has no publicly confirmed Africa-focused builder programme as of August 2026, which is a gap worth tracking given where the adoption numbers are moving.
The sovereign agent model Kannan describes is still speculative at the infrastructure level and untested at any meaningful scale. What the May 2026 post actually represents is a thesis statement, one aimed at developer communities and investors, from a company whose product portfolio is live but whose largest use case remains several years away from the conditions that would make it provable. Whether the coordination layer EigenLayer is building becomes the standard, or whether a competitor fills that role, will depend on whether the AVS ecosystem can generate real application revenue before the next restaking narrative resets the market.
