WazirX Launches AI Trading Assistant in Bid to Reclaim Indian Market Share

WazirX, the Indian crypto exchange still recovering from a $234 to $235 million hack two years ago, released an AI-powered trading assistant on August 24 that lets users research markets, monitor portfolios, and execute spot and futures orders through a single chat interface.

The product, called WazirX AI, is available on Android, iOS, and the web as an integrated feature of the existing app rather than a separate tool. The exchange is positioning it as India's first AI co-pilot specifically designed for crypto trading, a claim sourced from its own press materials that has not been independently verified against competing platforms CoinDCX and CoinSwitch.

The timing is notable. WazirX is not launching this from a position of strength. In July 2024, attackers linked by US, Japanese, and South Korean authorities to North Korea's Lazarus Group drained roughly $234 to $235 million from a multi-signature wallet, wiping out approximately 45% of the exchange's reserves.

The platform halted trading for more than a year before resuming operations in October 2025 with zero trading fees as an incentive to returning users. That resumption followed Singapore's High Court sanctioning an amended restructuring scheme on October 13, 2025, after a re-vote achieved 95.7% creditor approval. An earlier vote had seen only 3.3% turnout, requiring a second round. Approximately 85% of user funds were restored directly through the restructuring process. WazirX issued Recovery Tokens (RTs) in January 2026 representing about 15% of pre-hack user holdings. Those tokens are not tradable and will not be bought back until WazirX generates more than $10 million in quarterly recoverable value, a threshold the company has not publicly confirmed reaching. When RT buybacks do proceed, users are projected to recover 75 to 80% of their pre-hack balances in total over time, according to the restructuring plan.

The competitive fallout has been severe. WazirX held roughly 50 to 60% of India's crypto exchange market before the hack. Founder Nischal Shetty put his own exchange's share at 8 to 10% as of June 2026, acknowledging plainly that "we are far away from the original level." The WRX token, which sits at around $0.02, is down approximately 99.6% from its April 2021 high of $5.94 and sees daily trading volume below $20,000. Of the exchange's 16 million registered users, 4.4 million were directly affected by the hack.

WazirX AI is built around what the company calls an "ask, understand, decide" model. Users can type plain-language questions to pull live prices, macroeconomic news, and sentiment data alongside charts. Portfolio briefings covering account value, profit and loss, open positions, and connected balances can be requested at any time or scheduled as a daily morning summary. "WazirX AI combines market research, portfolio monitoring and trade preparation into one conversation, reducing the time and effort required to evaluate an opportunity and act," Shetty said.

Trade orders placed inside the chat surface as approval cards sized to the user's pre-set risk parameters, giving the user final sign-off before execution. Futures orders with leverage are also supported within the interface. For users new to crypto or unwilling to risk real funds while testing strategies, the platform provides a Paper Trading Sandbox with a simulated $100,000 balance.

WazirX claims that research tasks completable "in under 10 minutes" previously required hours, though that benchmark is company-sourced and unaudited.

"Crypto markets operate 24/7, but traders should not have to spend their day moving between charts, news feeds and trading screens," Shetty said in a statement accompanying the release. He has also tied the product strategy directly to user restitution: "The number one priority is generating profits so that we can distribute it [to users]."

Press Trust of India reported separately that WazirX is simultaneously expanding its futures offerings alongside the AI tool, targeting higher-margin business that could accelerate the profit generation needed to unlock Recovery Token buybacks.

For Indian users, the regulatory environment adds friction that no AI interface can remove. India taxes all crypto gains at a flat 30% with no loss-offset provisions. Every transaction above 10,000 rupees is also subject to 1% tax deducted at source, a structure that penalizes the high-frequency activity WazirX AI is designed to facilitate.

Stricter Virtual Digital Asset reporting requirements took effect in April 2026, and cross-border data sharing under the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework is scheduled to begin in April 2027. A Parliamentary panel report in July 2026 recommended placing Indian exchanges under formal SEBI supervision, with RBI handling cross-border dimensions. If enacted, that framework would introduce licensing requirements WazirX would need to meet, with Finance Ministry consultations ongoing and no confirmed implementation timeline.

The same regulatory pressures are visible across South Asia more broadly. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka each host large informal crypto communities operating under similarly ambiguous or restrictive frameworks. Features such as the Paper Trading Sandbox carry particular relevance for first-time retail investors in markets where onboarding infrastructure and financial education resources remain limited.

WazirX AI does offer a genuine advantage over third-party automation platforms such as 3Commas and Cryptohopper. Those tools have provided AI-driven trading automation across multiple exchanges for years, but they require API connections to access WazirX's order book. WazirX AI has direct, lower-latency access to the platform's own infrastructure, INR payment rails, and UPI deposit systems, which international automation tools cannot replicate.

The path forward depends less on the product itself than on whether WazirX can convert returning users into active traders and reach the profit thresholds required to start buying back Recovery Tokens. The SEBI licensing question will also define the operating environment for every Indian exchange in the coming regulatory cycle. For WRX token holders specifically, Monday's announcement changes nothing in the near term.
