Crypto Exchange Volumes Double in Five Days as Market Activity Rebounds
Spot trading volumes across major cryptocurrency exchanges roughly doubled within a five-day window ending August 24, reversing a months-long slump and lifting Bitcoin to $77,716, according to data reported by The Block and corroborated by DefiLlama.
The acceleration was triggered on August 19, when the US Treasury announced buyback operations and the White House held a crypto industry meeting where President Trump publicly called for Congress to pass the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act.
Those two events, arriving on the same day, sent institutional confidence higher across the market.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs (exchange-traded funds that give traditional investors exposure to Bitcoin without holding it directly) reversed two consecutive sessions of net outflows, short sellers began unwinding positions, and more than $4 billion in short liquidations amplified the upward price move.
Numbers Behind the Rebound
August's month-to-date spot volume stands at $490 billion across tracked exchanges, compared to $670 billion for the entirety of July. The gap reflects how slow August started before the mid-month surge drove the five-day doubling.
That context matters: CEX (centralized exchange) futures volume had hit a 31-month low of $4 trillion in July 2026, down 63% from its October 2025 peak of $10.9 trillion. Q2 2026 spot volume across the top 10 exchanges fell 27.9% quarter-over-quarter to $1.95 trillion. The current rebound is coming off a deeply depressed baseline.
On the ETF side, August 19 alone saw $517.19 million flow into US spot Bitcoin ETFs, the largest single-day inflow since May 4. BlackRock's IBIT product captured $284.7 million, or roughly 55% of that day's total, with ARK 21Shares ARKB adding $77.7 million and Fidelity FBTC contributing $62.4 million. The week ending around August 22 brought $1.92 billion in combined weekly inflows. US Bitcoin ETFs now hold $84.31 billion in net assets, equal to about 6.08% of Bitcoin's total market capitalization, with cumulative net inflows to US Bitcoin ETFs of approximately $52.79 billion.
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs, platforms that allow trading directly from user wallets without a central operator) also surged. DefiLlama data as of August 24 shows $9.28 billion in 24-hour DEX volume and $56.32 billion over seven days, a 73.98% week-over-week increase. DEX platforms now account for 24.45% of global spot trading volume, up from 6.9% in January 2024. For context, DEX market share previously peaked at 24.5% in June 2025 according to CoinGecko data, meaning the current figure represents a recovery to prior highs rather than a new record. Platforms such as Hyperliquid have broken into the top 10 exchanges by volume, illustrating how the structural challenge to centralized exchange dominance extends beyond a single market event. Total value locked in DeFi protocols sits near $76 billion, and the global stablecoin supply tracked by DefiLlama is approximately $307 billion.
XRP posted the single most striking individual data point: $15.4 billion in 24-hour trading volume on August 24, a roughly 1,300% increase from its August average of $1.1 billion per day and the largest single-day volume record for the asset in 2026.
Indian Exchanges Feel It Directly
India, which ranks first on the 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, saw the rebound hit retail platforms with notable force. CoinDCX co-founder Sumit Gupta said spot volumes roughly doubled between August 19 and 21.
Giottus CEO Vikram Subburaj reported spot volumes up 22% and futures up 31% week-over-week, adding that per-trader average volume rose approximately 10% in spot and 11% in futures.
WazirX VP Rajagopal Menon reported the sharpest move: "Futures reacted more sharply than spot, with daily futures volumes increasing by almost 7x" over the period from August 16 to 22.
The futures-heavy skew in India is consistent with the country's trader profile. Analysts and exchange executives have noted that Indian retail traders tend to be active in derivatives, and this event appears to have drawn that segment back into the market more aggressively than spot buyers.
Broader Regional Picture
Nigeria, ranked second on the 2026 Adoption Index, leads the world in on-chain DeFi value received. Volume surges on global CEXs typically correlate with higher peer-to-peer activity and stablecoin settlement in Nigerian naira corridors, where USDT and USDC function as a practical dollar proxy for savings and cross-border transfers. Sub-Saharan Africa has seen stablecoin use grow 180% year-over-year, concentrated in remittances, merchant payments, and savings, according to on-chain analytics data.
For Pakistan (ranked eighth globally), Kenya (13th), and Ethiopia (10th), the most direct benefit from high-volume events is improved liquidity on major platforms and tighter stablecoin peg stability. Deeper order books and better execution quality on Binance, Bybit, and OKX matter practically for traders and remittance users in those markets who rely on major exchange liquidity. Pakistan ranks fourth globally in retail CEX transactions per capita and has strong DeFi retail participation, which makes improvements in exchange liquidity conditions particularly consequential for its market. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, all dollar-scarce economies with significant remittance corridors, also stand to benefit directly from the stablecoin supply growth reflected in the current $307 billion global figure.
What Comes Next
The sustainability of this rebound depends on whether the policy catalyst holds. The Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act has not yet passed, and any stall in legislative progress could cool institutional inflows quickly. Bitcoin's 7-day gain of 23.53% is one of the sharpest weekly moves of 2026, meaning some pullback risk is baked in at current levels. DEX market share growth, however, appears structural rather than event-driven, and a continued rise toward or beyond 25% of spot volume would mark a meaningful shift in how on-chain capital moves globally. On the regulatory front, Bitget's ongoing FIU-India registration, expected to complete in 2026, represents a concrete forward-looking development with direct implications for institutional exchange access across South Asia.
