MoonPay Launches PayBox, Letting ChatGPT and Claude Spend Real Money

Miami-based MoonPay has released a crypto payment wallet that allows AI assistants to complete purchases, book flights, and execute blockchain transactions on a user's behalf, requiring no manual checkout steps from the user.

MoonPay launched PayBox on July 29, 2026, at paybox.sh, billing it as a "payment vault" that connects conversational AI platforms to real-world spending rails. The product directly integrates Claude (Anthropic) and ChatGPT (OpenAI), while the broader MoonAgents layer also extends support to Gemini and Grok.

Users fund a wallet through bank transfers, Apple Pay, Venmo, PayPal, or existing crypto holdings, then instruct their AI assistant to act as their purchasing agent. The product targets a fast-forming category in financial technology: transactions initiated and completed by AI software rather than humans clicking through checkout flows.

What PayBox Actually Does

Once funded, a PayBox wallet can execute token swaps, bridge assets across blockchains, and interact with decentralized finance protocols. It also connects to conventional retail: Amazon shopping, restaurant reservations through Resy, and flight bookings through Brij are listed among supported use cases at launch. Supported blockchains include Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, BNB, Avalanche, TRON, Bitcoin, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain, among others.

Users choose between two permission modes. "Always Ask" requires a passkey approval for each transaction. "Autonomous" lets the AI act freely within preset spending limits.

The security architecture relies on Sodot, an Israeli key management firm MoonPay acquired in April 2026 for roughly $100 million in stock. Sodot uses a technique called multi-party computation, which splits cryptographic keys across isolated hardware environments so no single point of failure can expose user funds. Card payments additionally incorporate a Visa agentic commerce protocol as part of the security model. One caveat is worth noting for developers and users evaluating custody design: public documentation from MoonAgents describes keys as stored locally on-device, while PayBox promotional materials emphasize MPC and enclave-based splitting via Sodot. These are materially different custody architectures, and anyone making financial decisions based on how keys are held should verify the implementation against MoonPay's current technical documentation before committing funds.

Sodot's technology currently secures more than $50 billion in assets across over 10 million wallets.

The product is built on x402, an open protocol intended to let any merchant or decentralized application connect to AI agent payment systems without going through a single gatekeeper. As of April 2026, the x402 protocol had processed approximately $50 million in cumulative volume and around 165 million agent transactions across 69,000 active agents.

Competitive Positioning

MoonPay is not the first company to target this space. Coinbase launched agent-capable accounts in June 2026, enabling ChatGPT and Claude to trade and manage portfolios within Coinbase's ecosystem. In May 2026, its Base layer-2 network introduced the Base MCP Gateway, a Claude-specific integration that lets the assistant execute on-chain DeFi actions via natural language commands. CCPayment launched an AI Agent Payments product on July 2, 2026, letting AI agents send and receive crypto autonomously via API, making it among the most recent comparable entrants.

MoonPay's pitch is that PayBox takes the opposite approach.

"The giants are building agentic payments inside their own walls; we're the opposite bet: your own money, on open rails, reaching everything the walled versions can't," said Neeraj Prasad, Chief Engineer of MoonPay Labs, in a statement to Fortune.

MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright framed the shift in more sweeping terms: "The card hid the cash. The phone hid the card. This is the era where money disappears into conversation."

The broader market context supports that framing. Stablecoin transaction volume reached $33 trillion in 2025, up 72 percent year over year. AI agents collectively executed an estimated 176 million transactions worth $73 million between May 2025 and April 2026, according to data compiled by Keyrock and reported via Nevermined.

Who Gets the Full Product and Who Does Not

PayBox's fiat onramp, the feature that lets users fund wallets directly from bank accounts without first owning crypto, is currently restricted to the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. This limitation matters most for users in Africa and South Asia.

Nigeria ranks second globally in crypto adoption, with approximately $92 billion in on-chain transaction volume in 2026. USDT stablecoins account for more than 40 percent of Nigerian crypto activity, and remittance corridors across Sub-Saharan Africa often carry fees exceeding 10 percent of the transfer value.

An AI-assisted stablecoin payment tool could meaningfully reduce that cost, but the fiat onramp restriction means Nigerian users cannot access the most seamless funding path at launch. MoonPay does support peer-to-peer Naira transfers in a separate product, but the virtual account feature central to PayBox is not yet included.

The continent's on-chain activity underscores the stakes. Sub-Saharan Africa recorded more than $205 billion in on-chain volume from mid-2024 to mid-2025, a 52 percent year-over-year increase, and Africa accounts for roughly 70 percent of the world's $1 trillion mobile money market.

India is among the world's largest crypto markets by user count and faces similar constraints. Indian users can fund a PayBox wallet using crypto they already hold, but the direct bank-to-wallet conversion that makes the product accessible to non-technical users is unavailable at launch. NPCI CEO Dilip Asbe stated in June 2026 that AI is poised to define India's next payments era, and analysts have pointed to the country's UPI infrastructure as a natural interface for agentic payment layers. Whether PayBox can integrate with that infrastructure remains an open question. Pakistan and Bangladesh are excluded from MoonPay's platform entirely due to regulatory restrictions, shutting out a combined population of more than 350 million people. Sri Lanka, Nepal, and several other South Asian markets also face exclusion from fiat onramp features at launch.

Kenya, which passed a Virtual Asset Service Providers licensing law in October 2025, offers the most permissive regulatory environment on the continent for a potential PayBox expansion. South Africa, which has had a formal crypto licensing framework since 2023, represents a technically feasible expansion candidate. MoonPay has not disclosed a timeline for entering either market.

Open Questions

The product's fraud and dispute resolution process remains undefined. According to a review by Crypto Briefing, MoonPay has not disclosed what happens when an AI agent completes an incorrect or unauthorized purchase, and no chargeback mechanism has been publicly described.

Regulatory ambiguity around software-initiated financial decisions also remains unresolved in most jurisdictions. The EU's MiCA framework is among the more developed regulatory environments touching this area, yet even it does not fully address questions of liability when autonomous software agents make financial decisions. In most other markets, including major economies in Asia and the Americas, no equivalent framework exists at all.

The IMF's 2026 research on agentic AI, published in IMF Notes (Vol. 2026, Issue 004), identified cross-border remittances as one of the primary areas where autonomous payment systems could deliver measurable consumer benefit. Whether PayBox reaches the markets where that benefit is greatest will depend on how quickly the company expands its fiat onramp beyond its current US, EU, and UK base. As of launch, MoonPay has not disclosed any timeline for extending that feature to India, Nigeria, Kenya, or other high-growth markets.
