Fortitude Mining Cuts ZEC Production Cost Nearly in Half With Nebraska Buildout, But Regulatory Walls Are Rising

Digital Currency Group's dedicated Zcash mining subsidiary, Fortitude Mining, has brought a 12-megawatt data center in Grand Island, Nebraska online, pushing its direct cash cost to mine one ZEC down from roughly $70 to approximately $40. With ZEC trading near $453 as of late July, that cost structure implies a gross margin of around 91 percent per coin, among the widest gross margins in publicly tracked crypto mining operations this cycle.
The Nebraska site is Fortitude's first purpose-built, or "greenfield," facility. All previous locations appear to have been acquired or co-located. The addition brings the company's total power capacity to more than 60 megawatts spread across seven sites. Fortitude produced approximately 157,000 ZEC in the year ending May 31, 2026, averaging about 366 coins per day. At current prices, that daily output is worth approximately $166,000, an estimate derived from the late-July price snapshot.
The cost reduction comes at a strategically important moment. Fortitude and medical technology company HeartSciences (Nasdaq: HSCS) announced a definitive all-stock merger agreement on June 22, 2026. The combined company would trade under the ticker TUDE, positioning Fortitude as what the company describes as the first publicly listed dedicated Zcash miner in the United States. DCG would retain approximately 95 percent of the combined entity on a fully diluted basis. CEO Andrea Childs said public-market status would provide "flexibility and access to capital" to expand the company's venture mining platform, with the merger expected to close in the second half of 2026.
DCG founder Barry Silbert has been vocal about his conviction in ZEC specifically. He has publicly floated the idea that five to ten percent of Bitcoin's capital base could shift toward privacy-focused assets over the coming years, naming Zcash as a primary candidate. In May 2026, he wrote on X that "The 'privacy' era in crypto has officially begun."
The network data behind Fortitude's bet is worth examining. ZEC's hashrate reached approximately 19.69 petahashes per second in mid-July, up 38 percent quarter-over-quarter according to Pine Analytics' Q2 2026 Zcash report. Despite a price gain of more than 1,000 percent over the trailing twelve months, mining difficulty has remained relatively flat, suggesting, as Pine Analytics notes, an unusually favourable environment for established miners. Shielded transaction volume has also grown; the Orchard privacy pool now accounts for 85 percent of all shielded ZEC, and shielded transactions as a share of total network activity hit an all-time high of 59.3 percent in February 2026.
Not everything in Zcash's 2026 has been positive. On May 29, a critical vulnerability was identified in the Orchard shielded pool that could have allowed undetectable counterfeit ZEC to be minted. Security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered the flaw using AI-assisted auditing tools. An emergency hard fork was deployed on June 3. No exploitation of the vulnerability has been publicly reported. The episode still rattled markets, sending ZEC from near $650 down to the mid-$300s before a partial recovery. For a protocol whose core value is cryptographic integrity, the episode was a material warning.
The regulatory picture outside the United States is where optimism runs hardest into structural friction. Within the United States, the SEC's closure of its investigation into Zcash was a significant positive regulatory development and a key catalyst for ZEC's rally from 2024 lows, a dynamic that directly underpins Fortitude's confidence in pursuing a Nasdaq listing. Beyond U.S. borders, India's Financial Intelligence Unit issued an order on January 25, 2026 requiring all registered exchanges to halt deposits, withdrawals, and trading of privacy coins, naming ZEC and Dash explicitly as "anonymity-enhancing cryptocurrencies" that obstruct AML/CFT compliance. The order cited anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations. Self-custody of ZEC remains legal, but regulated on-ramps and off-ramps are now closed in a country that represents one of the world's largest pools of crypto users. Crypto analyst Kashif Raza summarized the FIU's position plainly: "The FIU has labeled privacy coins as unacceptable assets due to high risk." Japan and South Korea have taken similar stances in recent years.
In Africa, the situation is less defined, and the following should be read as contextual analysis rather than documented fact: specific exchange actions in markets such as Nigeria or Kenya are not well-documented in current research. Nigeria's large peer-to-peer crypto user base operates largely outside regulated exchange infrastructure, where ZEC's privacy features carry genuine utility in an environment of capital controls and currency volatility. The same is true in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. However, institutional liquidity and local exchange support for ZEC remain thin across the continent. Fortitude's Nasdaq listing may increase ZEC's institutional supply profile globally, but it does nothing on its own to solve the access problem for retail users in markets where regulated channels are either restricted or absent.
Zcash's protocol roadmap does include features that could eventually matter in those markets. A selective disclosure tool allows users to share transaction records with regulators without fully removing privacy protections, which has helped ZEC secure re-listings on some exchanges in Asia and the Middle East. A Layer-2 network called Ztarknet, designed to enable private smart contracts via STARK proofs, launched in 2026. The Zcash Foundation has separately announced a target of achieving post-quantum cryptographic status within twelve to eighteen months. Whether those developments shift regulatory thinking in India or across the African markets discussed above before Fortitude completes its Nasdaq listing remains an open question.
