1inch Launches Aqua, a Self-Custodial Shared Liquidity Layer Spanning 13 Blockchains
By Verse Press Research Desk | July 28, 2026
DEX aggregator 1inch today opened its Aqua protocol to the public, introducing a self-custodial system that lets liquidity providers deploy a single wallet balance across multiple trading positions at the same time without sending assets to a smart contract pool. The launch covers 13 EVM-compatible blockchains simultaneously and comes with a combined incentive pool of 10 million 1INCH tokens and a pending 500,000 USDC component, distributed through the Merkl rewards platform.
How Aqua Works
Standard decentralized exchange (DEX) models require liquidity providers to lock tokens inside a pool contract, tying capital to one chain and one trading pair at a time. Aqua takes a different approach. Providers connect a wallet, approve a token balance, and register positions that reference that balance. The assets stay in the user's wallet at all times and are accessed only at the moment a trade executes. In practical terms, a $100,000 balance could back three separate positions that collectively quote $300,000 in available liquidity across different markets. 1inch describes Aqua as a registry rather than a pool.
The protocol also addresses a problem specific to concentrated liquidity AMMs (automated market makers), the model popularized by Uniswap v3 in 2021. Concentrated liquidity lets providers specify price ranges for their capital, which improves efficiency when prices stay in range but renders capital inactive when they move out. According to figures in 1inch's own launch materials, which originate from the company's press release and have not been independently verified, 85 percent of concentrated liquidity positions across major DEXs were sitting out of range and inactive during the first half of 2026, representing roughly $1.6 billion of the $1.84 billion tracked and generating an estimated $150 million in lost annual fees. Aqua's structure means a position that falls out of range does not strand the underlying capital; the same balance can still serve other active positions.
Aqua also blocks a tactic known as just-in-time (JIT) liquidity, where automated bots add liquidity in the same block as a large trade and remove it immediately after to capture fees without sustained capital exposure. The behavior is common on concentrated liquidity protocols and reduces returns for ordinary providers.
Launch Chains, Audits, and Incentives
Confirmed networks at launch include Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, and Robinhood Chain, with eight additional EVM networks not yet publicly enumerated.
The protocol completed eight independent security audits from OpenZeppelin, Bailsec, Hashlock, Hexens, MixBytes, Nethermind, Theori, and Decurity before going live.
The incentive program structures rewards across roughly 80 token pair markets, weighted toward ETH and liquid staking tokens (35 percent), stablecoins (30 percent), wrapped BTC (15 percent), major DeFi tokens (15 percent), and real-world assets or RWAs (5 percent). Payouts follow a 50/30/20 schedule over three months, with adoption checkpoints at days 30 and 60. The program includes wash-trading filters, per-wallet caps, and address blacklists designed to prevent gaming. Distribution runs through the Merkl platform, which charges a 1.5 percent fee, reducing the effective USDC disbursement to approximately 492,600 USDC if the DAO vote approves the full allocation.
The 500,000 USDC portion from the 1inch DAO requires a separate Snapshot governance vote before disbursement, and that vote had not yet concluded at the time of publication.
Readers should note that the 10 million 1INCH token allocation is worth approximately $800,000 at the current token price of around $0.08, placing 1INCH at roughly one percent of its all-time high of $8.65.
"The liquidity provisioning space is broken, but you only see how broken once there's an alternative. Today, that alternative has arrived," said 1inch co-founder Sergej Kunz.
Co-founder Anton Bukov added: "Aqua solves liquidity fragmentation for market makers by multiplying effective capital. From now on, the only limit to your capital efficiency is your strategy." Bukov also said that "with Aqua, 1inch is once again giving users back the power, empowering them to manage and optimize liquidity on their own terms."
What It Means for Emerging Market Users
The design choices in Aqua carry specific weight for retail users in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. India ranked first and Nigeria ranked second in the 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, and Aqua's chain and incentive design aligns closely with the usage patterns documented in these markets.
Nigeria alone received more than $30 billion in DeFi service value over a recent tracked period, according to IMF data, driven largely by stablecoin demand and remittance flows. Stablecoin adoption across Sub-Saharan Africa grew 180 percent year-over-year, according to data from CoinLaw and Transak, underscoring how central stablecoins have become to everyday financial activity in the region.
Nigeria's regulatory environment has also matured considerably. The Investments and Securities Act 2025 formally classified digital assets as securities under the country's SEC, and the Central Bank of Nigeria relaxed bank restrictions on licensed virtual asset providers, giving both institutional and retail participants clearer legal ground to engage with DeFi services.
Traditional concentrated liquidity provision is not practically accessible to small-wallet participants. Staying in range requires active monitoring, fast infrastructure, and tolerance for frequent rebalancing. Aqua removes the requirement to choose between positions or abandon capital when prices drift. For users in high-inflation economies seeking yield without surrendering custody, that is a meaningful structural shift.
Deployment on Arbitrum, Base, and BNB Chain also matters. Gas fees on these networks are a fraction of Ethereum mainnet costs, making participation viable for users moving smaller amounts.
The 30 percent stablecoin incentive weighting aligns directly with demand patterns in markets like Nigeria, Pakistan, and Kenya, where stablecoins function as a primary savings and payments tool rather than a speculative instrument.
Aqua's support for Robinhood Chain, which surpassed Ethereum and Solana to become the top RWA network by value on July 27, opens an additional path for users in these regions to earn yield on tokenized asset liquidity.
What Comes Next
Aqua's launch completes a development cycle that began with a developer preview at Devconnect in Buenos Aires in November 2025.
The protocol is designed to work alongside SwapVM, a companion 1inch system offering reusable instruction libraries for building DeFi strategies. The live release also introduces several new interface features, among them a liquidity leaderboard, an incentives screen, liquidity map visualizations, batch position creation, cross-chain provider profiles, and sub-wallets, giving participants a more complete toolkit for managing positions across networks.
1inch also announced an AI-assisted liquidity provisioning tool via its Business MCP integration, listed as coming soon.
The 1inch platform currently serves more than 26 million users and has processed over $700 billion in lifetime swap volume.
Whether Aqua can attract meaningful liquidity will be the near-term test of the launch's momentum. The 1INCH token remains deeply below its historical peak, and the effective USD value of the incentive pool is modest relative to the scale of a 13-chain deployment. The company also enters this launch from a position of competitive recovery: 1inch recorded a 60.3 percent quarter-over-quarter volume decline in Q1 2026 and fell to fourth place in aggregator rankings before recovering to approximately 60 percent market share in May 2026 following a Solana expansion. The unresolved DAO vote on the USDC component adds a further variable to the program's full activation, and the structural test for Aqua is whether its self-custodial design can translate into sustained liquidity depth at a time when the broader ecosystem is still weighing that trade-off.
