Cambrian Raises $6M Seed to Build Verified Data Layer for AI-Driven DeFi

a16z's crypto accelerator leads the round, with backing from Stanford and The Graph ecosystem angels. The startup is targeting what it calls a foundational gap in agentic finance: trustworthy data.

A blockchain infrastructure startup called Cambrian (also referred to as Cambrian Network in official materials) has closed a $6 million seed round to build a decentralized oracle network designed specifically for AI agents operating in DeFi. Andreessen Horowitz's Crypto Startup Accelerator (CSX) led the investment as part of its fourth cohort. Co-investors include the Stanford Blockchain Builders Fund and a group of angel investors connected to The Graph protocol ecosystem. Earlier disclosures cited the figure as $5.9 million; Cambrian has not publicly clarified whether the difference reflects updated terms or a final-close adjustment.

The core product is a data aggregation and verification network. It pulls together on-chain blockchain activity, price feeds, social sentiment, news, and code repository data, then runs that information through a consensus mechanism among network validators before delivering it to an AI agent. The goal is to give autonomous agents access to financial data they can act on with a higher degree of confidence that the underlying information has not been tampered with or manipulated. Cambrian describes its mission as building infrastructure for "agentic finance," a term for systems where AI agents autonomously manage or execute financial decisions on-chain.

The founder's background gives the project a degree of technical credibility that is relatively rare at the seed stage. CEO Sam Green holds a PhD in reinforcement learning from UC Santa Barbara and previously conducted research in AI and cryptography at Sandia National Laboratories. He co-founded Semiotic Labs, one of the four core developer teams that contributed to The Graph protocol. Semiotic received a $60 million grant from the Graph Foundation and contributed to infrastructure that now underpins more than $80 billion in cumulative trading volume through the Odos liquidity aggregator. Cambrian also integrates The Graph's Firehose, a high-speed raw data streaming tool, as part of its data pipeline. The Graph has processed more than 1.2 trillion queries to date and serves over 1,100 projects across 40-plus blockchains.

Green commented on the accelerator placement in a statement: "We're thrilled to join the CSX accelerator. I've followed the work of a16z's Chris Dixon, Tim Roughgarden, and Justin Thaler for years. Working with them will be valuable as we finish designing Cambrian's decentralized network." a16z CSX provides each cohort company with $500,000 in exchange for a 7% equity stake, along with a 12-week in-person program in San Francisco. The accelerator has backed 38 projects across DeFi, AI infrastructure, and Web3 tooling.

Cambrian's strategic partners include EigenLayer, Virtuals, and Eliza Labs. EigenLayer is notable here because it has developed a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) architecture that gives AI agents cryptographically verifiable runtimes. By way of explanatory context, a TEE is a secure computing enclosure that can prove to an outside party that code ran without tampering. Nader Dabit, EigenLayer's Director of Developer Relations, framed the collaboration this way: "We're seeing growing interest in verifiable financial agents. EigenLayer provides the best verifiable runtime for these agents, but they also need data with strong performance and security guarantees." Cambrian is, in effect, positioning its network as the data complement to that verified runtime layer. Cambrian has also released a live demonstration product called Deep42, an autonomous AI agent that publishes daily DeFi analysis on X under the handle @DeepFortyTwo.

The market Cambrian is entering is growing quickly, though it is currently dominated by a small number of incumbents. The global blockchain oracle market was valued at approximately $750 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $12.5 billion by 2034, at a compound annual growth rate of 36.5%. Chainlink holds roughly 59 to 70 percent of the market by total value secured, with $33.1 billion secured across 505 protocols. Pyth Network leads on Solana and Hyperliquid, while RedStone operates across more than 110 chains. None of the major incumbents have built an oracle product specifically oriented around AI agent consumption, which is the gap Cambrian is targeting.

For developers outside the United States, the practical relevance will depend heavily on how Cambrian builds out its validator network. South Africa moved an estimated $35 to $40 billion in on-chain value over the past 12 months, a 52% year-over-year increase, and now has 310 licensed crypto entities under the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), South Africa's crypto licensing body, where they are formally classified as Crypto Asset Service Providers (CASPs). The broader African continent hosts approximately one billion mobile money wallets across 43 markets, a scale that underlines why a trustworthy, composable data layer could matter for financial inclusion at the base of the pyramid. The April 2026 integration between VALR and Onafriq offers a live example of crypto infrastructure embedding itself into that ecosystem. Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam rank among the most active grassroots DeFi markets globally. Builders in these regions who are constructing AI-powered yield tools, remittance automation, or on-chain credit products could benefit from a composable, verified data layer that does not require them to build bespoke oracle infrastructure. However, Cambrian's current setup is US-centric, and the geographic distribution of its validator nodes will determine whether developers in Lagos, Mumbai, or Nairobi experience competitive data latency compared to those in North America or Western Europe.

According to industry forecasts cited by EigenLayer, AI agents could account for more than 80% of on-chain transactions by 2026. Executives at Consensus Miami 2026 made similar arguments, pointing to AI agent rails as the most likely vector for DeFi's broader mainstream adoption. Cambrian is building for that scenario. Whether the network can achieve the validator decentralization and geographic coverage required to serve a global developer base will be the central test as it moves from seed stage to live product.
