Input Output Co-Hosts Cryptography Workshop at Eurocrypt 2026, Advancing Post-Quantum and Privacy Research for Blockchain

Input Output (IO), formerly Input Output Global (IOG), the engineering organization behind the Cardano blockchain, co-organized the third edition of the Cryptographic Tools for Blockchains (CTB '26) workshop in Rome on May 9, 2026. The event drew roughly 50 academics and industry practitioners as a satellite event to Eurocrypt 2026, one of the three flagship annual conferences of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR), alongside Crypto and Asiacrypt.

Held one day before the main Eurocrypt conference opened (May 10 to 14), CTB '26 featured two invited keynotes and eight contributed talks spread across three sessions. Institutions represented included Stanford, EPFL, KU Leuven, the Ethereum Foundation, Sapienza University of Rome, Parity Technologies, Protocol Labs, and DFINITY. IO research engineer Jesus Diaz Vico served as a co-organizer alongside collaborators from Spain's NICS Lab and national research council CSIC, Daniel Morales of Decentralized Security, and Sapienza University.

The workshop does not publish formal proceedings and accepts work already published elsewhere, positioning it as a venue for applied cross-disciplinary exchange rather than original paper debuts.

"CTB '26 has established itself as a focused venue for bridging the gap between cutting-edge cryptographic research and its practical applications in blockchain systems," Diaz Vico said in an IO blog post published June 17.

Three Research Threads

Three technical areas defined the workshop agenda: post-quantum cryptography, private information retrieval (PIR), and witness encryption for Bitcoin.

The post-quantum keynote came from Benedikt Wagner of the Ethereum Foundation, who addressed the challenge of replacing the BLS signature scheme currently used by Ethereum validators. BLS signatures aggregate efficiently, meaning thousands of validator signatures can be compressed into one. Hash-based post-quantum alternatives like XMSS (Extended Merkle Signature Scheme, standardized by NIST) do not share that property.

Wagner presented a workaround: a minimal zero-knowledge virtual machine called leanMultisig that uses SNARKs (succinct cryptographic proofs) to replicate aggregation behavior. A Rust implementation called leanSig is in active development. The Ethereum Foundation declared post-quantum security a top strategic priority in January 2026, announced a $2 million research prize, and is targeting L1 protocol upgrades by approximately 2029. More than 10 Ethereum client teams are already running post-quantum interoperability test networks weekly.

IO's own post-quantum work on Cardano dates to at least 2018, when it launched a formal research programme focused on hardening the Ouroboros consensus protocol. Early collaborators included Professor Alexander Russell of the University of Connecticut, a quantum computation expert and Ouroboros co-author, and Professor Peter Schwabe of Radboud University, who co-developed the SPHINCS and Dilithium signature schemes and contributed to the NIST post-quantum standardization process.

The PIR session addressed a quieter but significant privacy gap in current blockchain design. When a mobile wallet queries the state of a blockchain through a third-party node, it reveals which addresses it is checking. PIR is a technique that allows a user to retrieve specific data from a database without the server learning which record was requested. Applied to blockchain light clients (the software mobile wallets typically use), PIR would let users access on-chain data without leaking wallet identity or transaction patterns to the nodes serving their requests.

Witness encryption, the third pillar, allows data to be encrypted against a computational problem so that only someone who can solve that problem can decrypt it. Applied to Bitcoin, this enables programmable spending conditions to be enforced cryptographically rather than by adding new instructions to Bitcoin's scripting language or requiring a consensus-layer change. Projects like PIPEs v2 are already exploring this approach to bring covenant-like functionality to Bitcoin without a soft fork.

Why This Matters Beyond Europe

For Cardano users in Africa and South Asia, the research directions at CTB '26 have concrete implications.

Nigeria and Kenya together account for 9.4% of all Cardano wallet activity. A $30 million treasury-approved developer grant programme drew 180 submissions from 14 African countries in its first week in early 2026. Projects in those markets concentrate on remittances, supply-chain tracking, digital identity, and financial inclusion for populations with limited access to traditional banking. The Cardano Africa Tech Summit (CATS26), held in Nairobi in February 2026, drew innovation teams from Nigeria, Ethiopia, DRC, Rwanda, and Burkina Faso, underscoring IO's sustained institutional presence across the continent.

PIR is particularly relevant in low-bandwidth environments where mobile users query blockchain state through third-party nodes and currently have no technical protection against wallet-address exposure. Post-quantum hardening matters for any user storing savings or business credentials on-chain who needs those cryptographic guarantees to hold over decades, independent of whether their government has quantum computing infrastructure.

South Asia is Cardano's fastest-growing region by user base: India and Pakistan together posted 40% year-on-year user growth in 2025. Witness encryption research carries practical weight in remittance corridors across the region, including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where trustless non-custodial Bitcoin bridges could reduce reliance on centralized exchanges and their associated KYC barriers. India's domestic regulatory environment, which imposes a 30% flat capital gains tax and a 1% tax deducted at source on transactions since 2022, has generated specific demand for privacy-preserving compliance tools, making the zero-knowledge proof work discussed at CTB '26 directly relevant to the region's largest crypto user base.

Cardano's Near-Term Roadmap

ADA is currently trading at approximately $0.17, with a market cap near $6.47 billion and 24-hour volume around $435 million, according to CoinMarketCap data as of publication. The 50-day and 200-day moving averages both sit close to $0.168, indicating a period of price compression. Two near-term protocol milestones are approaching: the Van Rossem Hard Fork (Protocol Version 11, targeting end of June 2026) is expected to improve Plutus efficiency, and the Leios testnet is targeting throughput above 1,000 transactions per second.

The cryptographic security work represented at CTB '26 forms the upstream research layer that underpins the long-term security guarantees of the Cardano protocol, providing the foundational assurances that the network's cryptography will remain sound as it continues to scale and mature.
