Ronin Gives Waypoint Wallet Users Until September 16 to Move Assets or Lose Them

Sky Mavis has retired Ronin Waypoint and replaced it with a new wallet product called Ronin Stash. Users who do not manually transfer their assets to a new address before September 16, 2026 will permanently forfeit them.

The announcement, published June 16 on the official Ronin blog, marks the end of Waypoint roughly 21 months after its September 2024 launch. Anyone holding NFTs, RON tokens, or other on-chain assets in a Waypoint account must complete a five-step migration at wallet.roninchain.com/app/migrating. The process involves connecting a Waypoint account and transferring assets to either a new Ronin Stash address or a traditional seed-phrase-based Ronin Wallet. The team's warning on the deadline left little room for interpretation: "If you do not transfer your assets before the deadline, they will be lost forever." Sky Mavis did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether any on-chain recovery mechanism exists after the deadline.

What is Ronin Stash, and how is it different from Waypoint?

Ronin Stash is a keyless wallet, meaning users never handle a seed phrase. Login works through email, Google, Apple ID, or other social accounts. Under the hood, the system relies on Privy, an infrastructure provider that uses multi-party computation (MPC) to split private keys into multiple cryptographic fragments stored across devices and servers. This approach avoids full custodial control by any single party while keeping the login experience simple enough for users without a crypto background. Ronin Waypoint used a similar keyless model, so the rebrand represents an infrastructure change rather than a conceptual reinvention. Ronin has moved its key management backend from its own stack to Privy's enterprise platform. Privy was acquired by Stripe in June 2025 and now sits within the same corporate family as Bridge, Stripe's stablecoin payments platform valued at $1.1 billion. Sky Mavis has not confirmed what benefits, if any, the Privy-Stripe relationship will provide to Ronin Stash users or its broader payment infrastructure.

Token metrics and network context

RON, the network's native gas token, was trading at roughly $0.06 to $0.10 as of this writing, according to CoinMarketCap; prices are approximate and subject to change. The token has a circulating supply of approximately 772 million tokens against a maximum supply of 1 billion. Market capitalization sits in the $47 million to $80 million range. The wallet migration follows a larger structural shift that occurred on May 12, 2026, when Ronin completed a hard fork that converted the network from an independent sidechain into an Ethereum Layer 2 (a secondary network that inherits Ethereum's security while processing transactions more cheaply). That transition, built on the OP Stack framework developed by Optimism, caused roughly 10 hours of downtime. Annual token emissions were also cut from 45 million RON per year to 5 million, bringing inflation below 1 percent. A new incentive model called Proof of Distribution now allocates builder rewards based on measurable activity such as gas spending, user growth, total value locked (TVL), and trading volume, replacing the older passive staking system.

What this means for users in South Asia and Africa

The migration deadline carries particular weight outside the United States and Western Europe. South Asia has a documented active Ronin user base; Sub-Saharan Africa's connection is primarily through the earlier play-to-earn cycle and structural market parallels. Many of those users joined during the Axie Infinity play-to-earn period of 2021 and 2022, and some may have remained active in later Ronin-native games. The US, India, and China alone account for roughly 62 percent of the global blockchain gaming base, per research cited in the 2026 BingX report, with Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brazil also key Ronin markets. For smartphone-first users in these regions, the Ronin Stash model is a meaningful improvement: seed phrase management is a genuine security risk on shared or low-cost devices, and social login reduces that friction substantially. Ronin reported more than 5 million active users completing over 250 million transactions in 2025, with cumulative wallet downloads exceeding 31 million. Nigerian and Ghanaian communities were also active participants in the P2E cycle. Those users, if still active, face the same September 16 deadline as anyone else.

Sky Mavis has separately flagged an "Emerging Markets Payments" initiative starting in the Philippines, with a focus on saving, spending, and eventually remittances. The Privy-Stripe connection is relevant here because Stripe maintains fiat payment infrastructure across South Asia, which could eventually allow direct local-currency flows into Ronin-based applications. Sky Mavis has not confirmed any such integration, and the potential benefits of the Privy-Stripe relationship for Ronin's payments roadmap remain speculative.

What to watch

The September 16 cutoff gives current Waypoint holders three months to act. Post-migration, attention will likely shift to whether Ronin Stash's Privy-based infrastructure translates into measurable onboarding improvements. According to 2025 Web3 UX benchmarks cited by Privy, embedded wallet deployments can reduce onboarding drop-off by as much as 65 percent. Ronin's TVL stood at approximately $180 million before the L2 migration, though post-migration figures should be verified against current data from L2BEAT or DefiLlama. The network currently hosts more than 70 Web3 games, and roughly 1,000 developer teams have been active on the platform since it opened to third-party builders.
